problem statement
In response to the lack of family-friendly and contemporary tourist attractions in the downtown Baton Rouge area, a solution is to create an exciting and inspiring aquarium in downtown Baton Rouge. This attraction will draw both locals and tourists to the area, create revenue, and aid in the development of future businesses in the area. The downtown area is home to several successful museums and attractions but could further benefit from an aquarium. In keeping with the goals of the Downtown Development District, the Capitol City Aquarium will restore life into the currently empty Commerce Building. The aquarium would draw over half a million people to the downtown area every year. The proposed location on Laurel Street downtown is a premier location, it is close to the river, has ample parking and open space for a parking garage, and is within walking distance to restaurants, other museums, the State Capital, and Baton Rouge Area Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Due to the large size of the proposed building there is an opportunity for a research facility, marine biology and veterinary science programs, and popular field trip location for surrounding schools. Its location on 3rd Street is also an opportunity for a nighttime restaurant and bar space. Adaptive reuse of a commercial office building poses interesting challenges because aquarium tanks are large and require filters, pumps, and employee access when the building consists of eight floors. But the large building gives the opportunity for shared facilities with the LSU Vet School and marine biology programs in the area.

concept statement
Inspired by the array of light, color, and movement created by the biodiversity of the ocean, the aquarium will reflect the animals’ natural environments. The use of colors inspired by vibrant sea creatures will create an intriguing and fun aquarium environment and complement the colors in the exhibits. The integration of immersion exhibits and naturalistic environments give visitors the sense that they’re actually in the animals’ habitats where buildings and barriers are hidden.
User client needs
The goal of the Capital City Aquarium is to appeal to a variety of users- young and old.
